Words you’ll hear, people you’ll meet
Da Ai, honor fee, Hao, Da Bei Zhou: Tao practice comes with its own words, many of them Chinese. Here is what they mean and who is who, from Master Sha and his teachers to our own guides, plus where to find the official sources and which names belong to Master Sha’s organization.
Meanings come from Master Sha’s own books and websites wherever we could find them, and each entry names its source. Where a meaning is Master Sha’s teaching, we say so. Spotted something we got wrong? Tell us.

Questions about words and names
Is Tao Practices Philippines part of Master Sha’s organization?
Is Tao a religion?
Master Sha’s organization says he is not teaching Taoism or a religion, and that Tao wisdom is compatible with other traditions. People of many faiths practice with us. Read Faith for honest answers and references.
Da Ci Bei, Da Bei Zhou: what’s the difference?
Both are about compassion. Da Ci Bei is “greatest compassion”, one of the Ten Da. Da Bei Zhou is the Great Compassion Mantra, a traditional chant of Guan Yin, which Teacher Henderson chants live every day at 1:00 PM Manila time.
When can someone call themselves a Tao Hands Practitioner?
Only after completing the official training. Master Sha’s site describes a two-day training in which you receive the Tao Hands transmission. If you are unsure whether someone is certified, check the certified teachers directory.
Can I post photos of a Tao Calligraphy, or share the song’s words?
Please don’t post photos of Tao Calligraphy: it belongs to Master Sha’s organization, and its terms don’t allow copies without written permission. Share a link to the official page instead. Tracing from your own book or card at home is exactly what they are for.
The Love Peace Harmony song is different: it is meant to be sung and shared. Share the words with credit to Dr. and Master Sha and the Love Peace Harmony Foundation.
How should I write Master Sha’s name?
Formally, Dr. and Master Zhi Gang Sha (or Dr. & Master Sha); in everyday writing, Master Sha. For teachers, use the title on their official teacher page, for example Teacher Henderson Ong, Certified Leading Master Teacher of Tao Academy.
Why are so many words in Chinese?
Master Sha grew up in China, and many practices draw on Chinese wisdom and traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese name carries the teaching, so it is kept, always with an English meaning. The books include a pronunciation guide for every phrase.
My teacher explains a word differently. Who is right?
Follow your certified teacher: our glossary is a starting point, not the final word. Then tell us, so we can check it and improve this page.
